Can I use a Tesla wall connector with a 50-amp subpanel?

Hey everyone! I am trying to avoid a costly $7k installation for a 100-amp wire, so I was wondering if I could use a Tesla wall connector with a 50-amp subpanel in my detached garage.
Do you know if adjusting the charging rate on the wall connector would work? I really don't want such an expensive upgrade.
